This week I got the chance to sit and chat with the author Kim Brooks. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, New York Magazine, Good Housekeeping, Chicago Magazine, Salon, Buzzfeed, and other publications. She has spoken as a guest on CBS This Morning, PBS Newshour, 20/20, NPR’s All Things Considered, Good Morning America, and the Brian Lehr Show. Her latest work is a memoir entitled Small Animals: Parenthood in the Age of Fear, which is one that I can not recommend enough. It is featured on our book recommendation list, for its honesty and insights, which I think every parent read.
We dived into the topic of female friendships and the struggles of creating new friendships and maintaining the ones we have. We talked about motherhood, the unrealistic expectations we place on relationships and our partners, and the ones we place on ourselves. We explored the feelings of guilt we feel because of the need to cultivate create friendships and maintain friendships outside our family units. Talking with Kim was an absolute pleasure, and in getting to know her and reading her work, I learned a lot about myself and I know you will feel the same
